Introduction Dental Assistant (Chairside): Under Direct and Indirect Supervision, the orthodontic assistant will assist the Orthodontist in administrative and clinical duties including (but not limited to): timely seating of patients, obtaining accurate/complete patient records, setting-up instrument trays, assisting the orthodontist with various orthodontic procedures, instrument sterilization, and note-taking while maintaining a clean, safe and friendly working environment for patients, parents and other staff members.  In addition, the orthodontic assistant will provide patient and practice support services, including (but not limited to): personal assistance, medical attention, and emotional support. Occasionally there may be some travel, by car or plane, required in order for you to participate in continuing education or seminars.
Job Functions Assistance in the treatment room before, during, and after consultations.

  • Prepares treatment room for patient by following prescribed procedures and protocols.
  • Prepares patient for dental treatment by welcoming, comforting, seating, and draping patients.
  • Provides the necessary information to patients by answering questions and requests.
  • Provides instrumentation by sterilizing and delivering instruments to treatment area; positioning instruments for dentist’s access; suctioning; passing instruments
  • Provides diagnostic information by taking radiographic, impressions for study models studies; taking photographs, and downloading these immediately onto the computer
  • Educates patients by giving oral hygiene, plaque control, and pre and post-treatment instructions
  • Documents orthodontic care services by charting in patient records; and ensures that ALL the information as given by the orthodontist is charted correctly; efficiently & precisely.
  • Maintains dental supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level anticipating needed supplies; placing orders for supplies & verifying receipt of supplies.
  • Sells consumables by asking the parent and patient if floss; and other consumables required
  • Preparation of treatment plans
  • Arrange patient files for next day appointments
  • Other duties, as they would benefit the support of the Dr.
  • Minimum of two years experience as an orthodontic/dental assistant with thorough knowledge of dental principles and procedures, prescribed procedures and protocols, sterilization methods as well as operating and maintaining various dental equipment and tools.
  • Grade 12 Certificate or G.E.D Certificate
